Motion

Our assignment was to shoot something in motion. Most would have chosen a sporting event or sport of some sort but I decided to shoot a little girl I met at the park. The little girl, Katelyn Bradshaw and her mother, Sara Bradshaw, were spending the evening alone at the park playing. Sara Bradshaw explained that she doesn’t see her daughter much because she works 50 hours a week at Walgreens in Sedro-Woolley. She takes advantage of the time they have together by going to the park and playing just the two of them.

The daughter was obviously enjoying her time, and her motion was perfect. It was difficult to catch the motion while the object was moving back and forth. I decided to stay in one position down low and take picture when she was in the center of the viewfinder.

I am confident that this picture will work for this project. Until I started talking to Kaitlin’s mom, there was no story attached to this picture. Once we talked for a while, I realized this is news worthy in a different sort of way. Sara spends all her time at work, leaving no time for her beautiful daughter. “She is growing like a weed, and I hate missing it,” said Sara Bradshaw. So this was not just an ordinary nightly trip to the park, this is a special moment for them, and I was able to catch it.

Katelyn Bradshaw, 17-months-old, was spending the evening with her mom, Sara Bradshaw, at Lake Padden.

"She is known for her cheesy smiles," said Sara Bradshaw. "She is our little 'ham' when the camera comes around."
